Background of the study

Wedding speeches in Nigeria are culturally significant events where language is used to convey blessings, humor, and social values. In Yoruba and Igbo traditions, these speeches are characterized by rich pragmatic nuances that include politeness strategies, humor, and culturally specific expressions. The use of language in wedding contexts not only reinforces familial and communal bonds but also serves to transmit cultural heritage (Okonkwo, 2023). This study evaluates the pragmatic elements in wedding speeches by examining how speakers employ language to manage face, negotiate relationships, and express goodwill. By analyzing recorded wedding speeches and conducting interviews with speakers and listeners, the research explores how pragmatic nuances differ between Yoruba and Igbo traditions. The study also investigates the role of code-switching, metaphor, and cultural idioms in enriching these speeches, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of the interplay between language and cultural identity (Afolabi, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Although wedding speeches are central to Nigerian cultural celebrations, there is limited systematic analysis of their pragmatic nuances. The intricate use of language to convey respect, humor, and cultural values in Yoruba and Igbo speeches is underdocumented, creating a gap in our understanding of how these traditions shape social interactions (Okonkwo, 2023). This lack of research hinders the development of effective communication strategies in culturally diverse settings. The study seeks to address this gap by investigating the pragmatic features that define wedding speeches, with an emphasis on identifying how these features impact audience reception and cultural continuity (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To identify key pragmatic features in Nigerian wedding speeches.

2. To compare these features across Yoruba and Igbo traditions.

3. To assess the impact on audience reception and cultural transmission.

Research questions:

1. What pragmatic nuances characterize wedding speeches in Yoruba and Igbo traditions?

2. How do these nuances affect audience perception?

3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of these speeches?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of the pragmatic nuances in Nigerian wedding speeches, offering insights into the cultural and communicative functions of these traditions. The findings will benefit cultural practitioners, linguists, and event organizers by informing better communication practices in ceremonial contexts (Eze, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses exclusively on pragmatic nuances in Nigerian wedding speeches within Yoruba and Igbo contexts. It does not extend to other cultural or formal speech settings.

Definitions of terms:

1. Pragmatic Nuances: Subtle aspects of language use that convey additional meaning beyond the literal.

2. Wedding Speeches: Formal addresses delivered during wedding ceremonies.

3. Cultural Transmission: The passing of cultural values and practices from one generation to another.
